Annual powwow celebrates heritage

Rhythmic drum beats and chants set the tone this weekend as more than 8,000 people gathered to sing, dance and celebrate the ancient traditions of one area American Indian tribe. Dancers filled the outdoor arena, dressed in bright, feathered regalia as area residents cheered and relaxed under blue skies during the 44th annual Haliwa-Saponi Powwow. The celebration, which started Friday evening, came to a close Sunday afternoon.
