Grand Opening Scheduled for Red Lake Skate Park
At the August 29 grand opening ceremony for the recently opened Red Lake State Park, Apache Skateboards team members and pro riders from Familia Skateshop will demonstrate their skills.
Following the ribbon cutting at 3:30 p.m., various skateboarding activities will follow including a product toss by No Comply Skateshop, "best trick" contests, prizes and skateboard clinics. A live DJ will spin and food will be served. The celebration is open to everyone.
The skatepark groundbreaking took place this past April on the front lawn near Red Lake High School.
The new skatepark—as well as two basketball courts—were built in Red Lake this summer as part of an initiative to engage the community’s youth in activities that promote healthy lifestyles. A grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community helped fund the 7,000-square-foot park/skatepark, along with renovations to the Red Lake basketball courts.

"This park is for our kids," said Red Lake Chairman Floyd Jourdain, Jr. "We need to develop positive activities for our youth to do around the rez besides basketball. The Tribal Council will continue to encourage youth to participate in arts and crafts, as well as sports and other activities."
The Red Lake school district donated the land for skateboard park use. "The school district has let the kids skate in the parking lot for a few years when others have chased the skaters off, and we thank them for that," said Jourdain during the groundbreaking. "Now they have given us this land to use, in this great visible spot near the highway, we greatly appreciate that."
