Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan
The $6.1 million dredging of the contaminated muck in the Saginaw River has begun. The state, federal government and the tribe sued General Motors and the cities of Bay City and Saginaw in 1994 over contamination of the river and bay dating back to the 1960s. The settlement was finally reached in November 1998. On April 13 the Luedtke Engineering Co. of Frankfort started the long-awaited process in front of Bay City's wastewater treatment plant. It is expected to be completed by November. Luedtke will dredge five so-called "hot spots'' in the Saginaw River dredging 80 percent to 90 percent of the PCBs, or toxic compounds. The dredging is paid for by a $28.2 million lawsuit award for natural resources damages, The Bay City Times reported.
