Watch: Derrick Suwaima Davis Wins Second Place at Heard Museum’s World Hoop Dance Championship
Derrick Suwaima Davis, Hopi/Choctaw, a seven-time Heard Museum World Hoop Dance Champion took home second place in the adult division of the 25th annual contest on Feb. 8. The defending champion lost the first place title to fellow long-time competitor, and former champion of the contest, Nakotah LaRance.
LaRance edged Davis out by just six points with a score of 241, to Davis’s 235. Tony Duncan came in third with 233 points.
The Hoop Dance Championship took place at the Heard Museum in Phoenix. The dancers were judged on five skills: precision, timing/rhythm, showmanship, creativeness and speed.
