Chicago activist ‘walked in the path of her ancestors’

At just 17, Susan Kelly, Standing Rock Sioux, arrived in Chicago to work for a Dakota woman who needed help. She would go on to help found the American Indian Center of Chicago in 1953, the first of its kind in the U.S. This photo was taken in the early 1940s, about the time she arrived in Chicago.
