Event set for October 29, highlights Native youth art created to honor 'superheroes' in their lives

The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is hosting an opening reception for this year’s Native American Youth Art Show on Saturday, October 29 from 1–4 p.m. The exhibit will be on display from October 29 to January 9 in the Artist Circle Gallery. The opening reception is free to museum members, or with admission.

The event was established in 1979 to encourage creativity among Native youth, and to help them recognize the future preservation and evolution of Native culture lies with them, according to Indian Pueblo Cultural Center Head Curator Paula Mirabal.

“This year, we’ve invited our Native youth to submit renditions of their personal superheroes — the places, people, or things that help them see the beauty in the world,” Mirabal said. “We’re hoping they can share their unique perspectives and be opened to the importance and viability of art as a future for themselves and their communities’ way of life.

“This art show gives them an opportunity to shine. We hope everyone can come out and support our Native young people as they showcase their work.”

The 2024 feature film, "Aberdeen," co-written and co-directed by filmmakers Eva Thomas and Ryan Cooper, stars Gail Maurice, left, as the title character, along with Billy Merasty, center, and Liam Stewart-Kanigan. Submissions are from multiple mediums, such as paintings, sculpture, drawing, and mixed media. Winning artists will receive a prize; additionally, participants can make their works available for sale, receiving 100% of the proceeds.
