PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Smoki Museum will present Gerald Dawavendewa, children’s book author and illustrator, as the featured guest artist and Sundays at the Smoki guest speaker for the month for May. He will be demonstrating and selling his art work Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the museum and will provide a lecture on his work Sunday, May 17 from 1 – 2 p.m. in the pueblo.
Dawavendewa, Hopi/Cherokee, grew up in the Hopi village of Munqapi in northern Arizona. He attended the University of Arizona where he received a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts degree. Gerald has worked as an exhibit specialist with the Arizona State Museum in Tucson, were he assisted with the development and construction of the exhibit entitled “Paths of Life: American Indians of the Southwest.”
In addition, he was commissioned to create a mural depicting the Hopi world that is a permanent part of the ASM collection. Other experience includes an internship with the National Museum of American Indian, Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.; consultant to various museums across the country; and guest lecturer at schools, universities and community colleges.
The lecture is free and open to the public, refreshments will be provided. The museum is located at 147 N. Arizona St. in Prescott.
