BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – Interim Crow Tribal Chairman Cedric Black Eagle plans to run for the post vacated with the Feb. 15 death of Chairman Carl Venne.

Black Eagle made the announcement Monday, the opening day of candidate filing for the post. The primary election is scheduled for March 28, with the top two vote getters advancing to the April 18 general election.

Black Eagle was re-elected as tribal vice chairman in November. Under the tribal constitution, he will serve as interim head of the tribe until a new chairman is elected.

He says if elected he will continue projects begun by Venne, including pushing Congress to ratify the Crow Water Settlement Act, which would bring a $527 million federal settlement to the tribe. He said he would also support a planned $7 billion coal-to-liquid fuel facility.
