Companies will provide technical assistance

Two Indian-owned small businesses have been awarded contracts totaling more
than $3 million to assist the U.S. Department of Education in providing
services to help schools, tribal colleges and universities and tribal
education departments improve achievement and opportunities for Indian
students, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige announced.

New West Technologies in Englewood, Colo., will receive $1.8 million over
two years to provide analytic services including research, evaluation and
data collection processes and Kauffman and Associates in Spokane, Wash.,
will receive $1.4 million over two years to provide technical assistance to
schools.

“President Bush’s Executive Order on American Indian and Alaska Native
Education emphasizes the importance of helping students meet the
challenging academic standards of the No Child Left Behind Act while
honoring tribal traditions, languages and cultures,” Secretary Paige said.
“We believe that the No Child Left Behind Act, which combines greater
accountability for results with flexibility for local school districts,
more choices for parents and measurement of student progress, provides and
excellent framework for Indian students to meet the goals of the Executive
Order and achieve academic success.”
