The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) will turn Milwaukee, Wisconsin into the epicenter of Indian Country for its mid-year conference on “Native Resources: Tribal Cultures & the Economy” from June 13-16.
This year’s conference focuses on natural resource issues, economic development and tribal cultures. The NCAI anticipates close to a thousand attendees including leaders from tribal governments and organizations, top United States Government officials and members of the organization.
In addition to the four day conference, on June 14 at noon, the NCAI will hold a press conference to outline the potential impact of the native vote on the 2012 elections, specifically focusing on crucial swing states in the mid west, such as Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The event will feature the following speakers:
- Former Senator Byron Dorgan, chairman of the U.S. Senate Indian Affairs Committee
- Larry Echo Hawk, assistant secretary for Indian Affairs
- Kimberly Teehee, senior policy advisor for Native American Affairs at the White House
- James L. Santelle, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin
- Rebecca Kleefisch, lieutenant governor of Wisconsin
- Tom Barrett, mayor of Milwaukee
- Lewis Taylor, chairman of the St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin and president of the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council
- Jefferson Keel, NCAI president
