December 29 marks the anniversary of the Battle of Wounded Knee. This 1890 conflict is what many people call the last battle of the Indian wars in the United States. That is inaccurate, however. In 1889, the U.S. government divided land that belonged to the Lakota into five reservations. The white man was seeking a way to force the indigenous people to change their lifestyle from one of hunting and gathering to one of agriculture.
