FARGO, N.D. – The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe says it is awaiting the return of dinosaur fossils taken by a college in Minnesota.
The tribe says a Concordia College professor and students did not have permission to take the fossils from tribal land in 2003. But officials from the college say they did nothing wrong.
Tribal member Adrienne Swallow says the incident prompted the tribe to adopt a paleontology code. Swallow says it’s important to have a process to recover fossils taken from the reservation, which straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border.
Mark Krejci, Concordia’s vice president for academic affairs, says the school has returned some fossils to the tribe. He says the remainder will be returned in the spring.
