The state Department of Environmental Quality and the Umatilla have agreed to meet quarterly to discuss the state permitting activities at the U.S. Army Umatilla Chemical Depot. The agreement, announced March 14, will cover government-to-government coordination and communication between the DEQ and the tribe on environmental permitting, environmental monitoring and compliance and enforcement issues regarding the Army’s program to destroy chemicals stored at the depot. It stores more than 220,000 bombs, rockets and other weapons containing chemical and nerve agents in 89 storage igloos.
