I would like to comment on the article, ”King’s message remains potent for American Indians,” by Kara Briggs [online Jan. 22]. This was an excellent article. She uttered the words that so many Native people need to hear. I found the piece so well-worded, and spoken from a true desire to share the news that is of great importance to our people.

I think it is a shame that we do not as a Nation celebrate some of the Native forefathers and address the desperate needs for equality, justice and attention so deserved to this land called America.

I am an employee and tribal member of the ”Unconquered and Unconquerable” Chickasaw Nation and each year we celebrate Chief Piomingo Day in lieu of Columbus Day, but I think that for our children it is very important that the U.S. government recognize our contributions to America.

I want to express my gratitude for the editors and staff of the Indian Country Today newspaper for sharing news that is important to all Natives across this land.
