A U.S. senator from North Carolina is drawing fire from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians for throwing her support behind a plan that would give full federal recognition to Lumbee Indians in the eastern part of the state. Sen. Kay Hagan said this week she sent a letter to Rep. Mike McIntyre, a Democrat from Lumberton, to express her support for his Lumbee Recognition Act.
