EAGLE BUTTE, S.D. – The red construction paper hearts that adorned the walls of the Cheyenne River Elderly Nutrition Center in February symbolized the heart of the organization and its director, Iyonne Garreau.
For 33 years, Garreau has devoted so much of herself to helping Cheyenne River Lakota elders not only receive nutritious meals, but gather in a place that truly honors them. In February, the nutrition center prepared a Valentine’s Day dinner and celebrated with 75 elders.
The Cheyenne River Elderly Nutrition Center takes care of elders with daily meals and festive activities throughout the year despite many obstacles. Garreau recalled a fire that destroyed the nutrition center in 1995 and said, ”You just go on. We did not shut down for even a day. We began cooking food for the elders out of our own houses.”
It took nearly two years to rebuild the nutrition center, but today, thanks to Garreau’s strong heart, leadership and dedication, the nutrition project continues to serve hot meals to an average of 570 Lakota elders daily throughout the reservation.
Running Strong is proud to work with Garreau and support the Nutrition Center with food and holiday activities. ”This place honors people. We don’t simply serve meals – we provide meals in recognition and respect of our elders. We appreciate all your support over the years,” Garreau said with a smile.
And so Running Strong honored Garreau in February as she celebrated both her 75th birthday and retirement after 33 years of service to her community.
