PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: The successful candidate will be prepared to teach social work coursework consistent with the Department’s purpose and values (http:/www.humboldt.edu/socialwork). Teaching responsibilities will be in both graduate and undergraduate courses in both face to face and online environments.
We hope to attract a candidate that has an expressed interest in teaching, research, and community service relevant to Indigenous Peoples. Significant components of our Department’s purpose are to establish meaningful partnerships with rural communities and Native American tribes, continue to improve the BASW/MSW curriculum in this regard, and educate social workers to be prepared to work in tribal and rural contexts.
The primary professional responsibilities of faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. Dedication to excellence in teaching is a long-standing tradition at Humboldt State University and is the primary criterion in promotion and tenure considerations. Responsibilities may include 3 units of normal ancillary/collateral duties (including student advising, faculty governance, university and college committee work, and community relations) and teaching an average of 12 units in lower and upper division undergraduate courses, foundation and advanced year graduate courses. Additional professional responsibilities include: maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in other academic functions. Non-tenured assistant level professors are generally granted course release in their first year of appointment and provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. Probationary faculty are also eligible for grants from the university to support research, scholarship and other forms of creative activity.
GENERAL INFORMATION: The Department of Social Work offers courses year-round on campus and online through our Distributed Learning BA and MSW Programs. Our CSWE accredited BASW Program has been educating students since 1945, while the accredited MSW program began in 2004. Beginning in 2011-12, the Department initiated online BASW and MSW programs to serve rural and tribal communities.
Of the three colleges on campus, Social Work is part of the College of Professional Studies. The Social Work Department at HSU includes approximately 135 BASW majors and 75 MSW students, 12 faculty, and 4 staff. These numbers will likely grow as the Distributed Learning MSW program is fully implemented. The department is committed to collaborative partnerships with tribal, community-based and global initiatives.
