The band recently hired Phil Galeoto as Tribal Police Chief. The expert in community policing techniques has 25 years of law enforcement experience. He worked his way up through the ranks of the Reno (Nev.) Police Department where he most recently served as a lieutenant. Since 1991, he has been a community policing trainer for several agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) since 1996. Galeoto was one of two Nevada officers selected to develop a training curriculum with the Western Community Policing Center which trains officers from throughout the nation, including several Mille Lacs officers and band members last summer. He will be responsible for personnel, budgeting and the overall operation of his department. Galeoto said one of his primary goals is to bring the department and the people on the reservation closer together. “Over the next several months I will ask people who live, work and raise children here to talk with me about making this community a safer and more comfortable place to live. Together, we will work as a problem-solving team to discuss possible strategies for addressing people’s concerns.”
