SEATTLE – Mark Trahant said he’s not sure what’s next in his career but he’s “looking forward to the challenge” after his tenure as Seattle Post-Intelligencer editorial page editor ended with the paper’s conversion to Web only March 17.

Prior to joining the P-I in 2003, Trahant, 51, was CEO of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education in Oakland, Calif., a columnist with The Seattle Times, publisher of the Moscow-Pullman Daily News, executive news editor of The Salt Lake Tribune, and a reporter at The Arizona Republic in Phoenix. He is a former president of the Native American Journalists Association.

Trahant lives on Bainbridge Island with his wife, Lenora, and their two children.

He is the author of “Pictures of Our Nobler Selves,” a history of American Indian contributions to journalism; and contributed an essay to “Lewis and Clark through Indian Eyes,” edited by Alvin M. Josephy Jr.

Trahant moderated the forum, “Prez on the Rez,” Aug. 23, 2007 on the Morongo reservation in Southern California, the first time a presidential forum was held in Indian country.

At an Aug. 6, 2004 conference of journalists of color, President Bush stumbled on a question from Trahant about tribal sovereignty, saying at one point that American Indian nations had been “given” sovereignty.
