Four days of events will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee in South Dakota.

The occupation — the fourth in a series of takeovers by American Indian Movement leaders — started Feb. 27, 1973, and continued 71 days until a cease-fire agreement was reached on May 8, 1973.

Here is a list of events scheduled to commemorate the anniversary and related activities.

Friday, Feb. 24
KILI Radio 40th Anniversary

The creation of KILI Radio, known as the Voice of the Lakota Nation, grew out of the occupation at Wounded Knee and began operating in 1983.
5:30 p.m. – Supper
6:30 p.m. – Welcome, flag song/honoring song Creekside singers, recognition and awards presentation, social dancing, poetry slam, hand drum competition

Saturday, Feb. 25

5:30 p.m. – Supper provided by the families of Beau Little Sky & June Little
6:30 p.m. – Sounds of Resistance concert at Porcupine School

Wounded Knee Four Direction Walk & Ride
9 a.m – Meet up at starting points in each direction
1 p.m. – Come together at Wounded Knee mass gravesite for ceremony, followed by a meal provided by the Banks family6 p.m – Supper, honoring and giveaways at Wounded Knee District School, Manderson, South Dakota, with meal provided by the Agnes and Buddy Lamont families and Olowan Martinez family
