The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has sued the U.S. Army, seeking return of the remains of two boys who died at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Stewart Huntington has more on a case that could have far reaching impacts for tribal efforts to honor the children who died at the infamous institution.
Navajo Nation president Buu Nygren called upon the Veterans Affairs Committee earlier this month to address critical issues affecting his nations’ veterans. In 2017, less than half of Native veterans used at least one VA benefit or service. Nygren said this is because veterans have limited access to information regarding their benefits and entitlements.
Tensions continue to escalate between Indigenous communities and the government. More than 1500 Indigenous people were displaced from their homes after the Mexican army came into their town to quote “reestablish order.” The town which is mostly made up of Tsotsil, Cho’ol and Mam people.
Researchers have found that the socio-economic impacts of climate change are heavily impacting indigenous communities. Conducted in 48 diverse sites across different climate zones internationally, the study collected first-hand data of changes in ecosystems, related to atmosphere, water, agriculture and more.
