A fire at a cultural center nearly four years ago ruined a collection on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. Liz Dempsey, from the Montana School of Journalism, reports on how museums and curators from around the region joined in the effort to protect and preserve the sacred, and everyday items damaged in the blaze.
- The National Endowment for the Humanities announced grants totally $411,000 to tribal nations will support the history of federal boarding schools in the U.S. The Cowlitz Indian Tribe Washington state and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians in Michigan are among the 13 tribes to receive up to $30,000 in funding.
- Two tribal nations are suing social media companies over youth suicides. The lawsuit filed earlier this week in Los Angeles County names Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and other popular platform’s parent companies as defendants. The Spirit Lake Tribe in North Dakota and the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin are accusing the social media companies of contributing to the disproportionately high rates of suicide among Native American youth.
- In Hawai’i, a new bill is under consideration in the state’s legislature that could make a small change on part of its iconic rainbow license plates. If passed into law, it would require all new license plates to include an Okina, which is a glottal stop, between the is in the word Hawai’i.
