The Pathways Indigenous Arts Festival was held at Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino on Pojoaque Pueblo lands, last weekend. This was the third year of the festival, featuring artists, filmmakers, musicians, and more. Karl Duncan, is Poeh Cultural Center’s Executive Director.

The Santa Fe Indian Market, sponsored by the Southwest Association for the Arts celebrated its 101st birthday over the weekend. Artists traveled from more than 100 tribal communities in North America and Canada to make the event. Its executive director is Jamie Schulze.

The House Freedom Caucus released a letter stating a list of demands. If those demands aren’t met, the group says it is willing to let a government shutdown happen. At the same time, the Farm Bill is up for renewal and shares the same deadline as the appropriations bills. Both of these have a big impact on Indigenous nations. ICT’s political correspondent Pauly Denetclaw provides details.

  • President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited Maui to survey the fire damage and meet with people who are grieving the loss of loved ones and homes in Hawai’i. With at least 114 people killed and over 800 people are missing. Gov. Josh Green anticipates more bodies could be found as the search continues.
  • In Lac du Flambeau territory, a federal judge stopped a lawsuit seeking to stop the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa from barricading reservation roads. The tribe blocked the roads in January, saying the agreements allowing passage had expired. The closure impacted 21 non-tribal land owners access to property inside the reservation. U.S. District Judge William Conley ruled for the tribe, affirming its sovereign right to control access to its roads.
  • There is new funding aimed at tackling the history of federal boarding schools in the U.S. The National Endowment for the Humanities announced a special funding opportunity of up to $30,000 per project. It will fund projects like language revitalization, research related to unmarked graves and the creation of websites or books on tribal histories of the federal Indian boarding school system.
  • Northern Chumash Tribal Council Chairwoman Violet Sage Walker was one of 18 members appointed to the federal Ocean Research Advisory Panel. She is joined by representatives from a variety of backgrounds including academia, tribal and state governments. The advisory panel will help guide federal government efforts in tackling some of the biggest challenges facing our oceans.
  • The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe launched their new learning program, Nuuwayga, in partnership with The Language Conservancy. The free website allows users to learn Ute, starting with basic words and phrases. An on-line dictionary supports the effort. An app for mobile devices is in the works.
