Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut has died. The 7,000 pound orca was also named Tokitae, which is a Salish word meaning nice day or pretty colors. She spent 53 years of her estimated 57 year life in the Miami Seaquarium and was the subject of a wide-spread campaign calling for her return to her home waters near Seattle.
A petition to reinstate the name of the NFL’s Washington Commander’s team back to its previous one has gained over 100,000 signatures. It calls for the R word to be restored to the Washington NFL Football team. The previous name is a dictionary defined racial slur and was replaced in 2020 at the celebration of many Indigenous people.
For more than four decades, the Northern Chumash Tribal Council has been pushing for the federal government to establish the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary in California. To get there, it must get approval from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
