The harsh history of boarding schools in the United States and Canada is unresolved. And yet in recent years there has been an accounting of some of the abuses – as well as the steps being taken to right wrongs. ICT’s Stewart Huntington has this story.
We now learn more about that repatriation effort from Tamara St. John worked for years to get the remains of one of her tribal ancestors returned home from a cemetery at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. ICT’s Stewart Huntington about the effort.
Another example of that comes from Canada where a movement started a decade ago to commemorate the experiences of students at a single Canadian Residential School. Canadians were reminded of this legacy on September 30, Orange Shirt Day. ICT’s Stewart Huntington has more.
There is another boarding school story from the theater. Mary Kathryn Nagle is an attorney and playwright. Her plays have explained complicated concepts from federal Indian law to the legal implications of climate change. ICT’s Mark Trahant talked with Mary Kathryn and her husband Jonodev Chaudhuri.
