Water has played an integral role in the lives and culture of the Ojibwe. ICT’s Stewart Huntington learned about the Red Lake Nation’s effort to reclaim stewardship of part of their namesake waters.

In the north, salmon is at the center of lifeways. In many regions, it’s an overfished relative that is losing its habitat. That’s part of the reason one Alaska Native leader took his concerns all the way to the United Nations. Chief Gary Harrison from the Chickaloon Native Village traveled to New York in the spring. He went to the 22nd session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

A sea change is underway in the Pacific Northwest. Oregon wildlife officials are turning to tribes for leadership and expertise in restoring salmon runs and habitat. ICT’s Stewart Huntington visited with tribal leader Brad Kneaper from the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians about their new pacts. Since this interview with Kneaper last summer, all nine Oregon tribes have entered co-management agreements with state wildlife officials.

Oneida Nation citizen Jeff Mears is the executive director of the Wisconsin Tribal Conservation Advisory Council. Here he spoke to ICT about forest management.

This summer saw many canoe journeys working to revive ancestral rivers and waterways that once connected Native Nations. Onondaga Citizen Hickory Edwards paddled one such journey along the eastern seaboard. ICT caught up with him and others in Shinnecock Territory on New York’s Long Island.
