Two Alaska Native organizations have announced they are leaving a major coalition. The Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes says it is leaving the Alaska Federation of Natives after this year. The Tanana Chiefs Conference, an Alaska Native non-profit corporation, also announced a withdrawal.

An Indigenous woman is helping the University of North Dakota return the ancestral remains it houses. Mary Baker, a Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation citizen, is assisting the school as it works to comply with the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

In our continuing coverage of the sex abuse trial involving the former Dances with Wolves actor Nathan Chasing Horse, we learn that Chasing Horse and his lawyers have asked the state of Nevada’s high court to toss out his sweeping indictment in state court. The appeal marks his latest attempt to get the pending charges dismissed. Chasing Horse remains jailed in Las Vegas on 18 felony charges, including sexual assault of a minor, child abuse and kidnapping.
