A Caldecott Medal winner has a new book for children. Carole Lindstrom writes about important issues facing Indigenous people–from a child’s perspective. “We Are Water Protectors,” and her new book “My Powerful Hair,” take on social and political issues facing Native people today.
Last month was Canada’s first National Ribbon Skirt Day. The holiday celebrates a style of contemporary skirt traditionally worn by Indigenous women. To get ready for next year, one Mi’kmaw community is making sure there are enough dresses for everyone. APTN’s Angel Moore has the story.
Osage nation citizen Liam Trumbly, who goes by the stage name Paxhon, just released his new single, “Moonlight.” The song showcases his music education and mentorship with Grammy winning songwriter, Keith Sykes.
A slice of our Indigenous world:
- A former Pueblo governor has been tapped to become the New Mexico’s secretary of the Indian Affairs Department. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the appointment of Pueblo de San Ildefonso citizen James Mountain.
- In Montana, the American Indian Caucus is hitting the ground running. The state’s legislature has the highest Indigenous representation of any other state in the country. There are 11 total legislators in the caucus, four in the state Senate and seven in the state House.
- And in Nebraska, the traditions of Indigenous communities are being shared through a museum exhibit. The new interactive exhibit at the Omaha Children’s Museum is called “A Generation of Hope: Indigenous Peoples of the Heartland.”
- An Indigenous senator is calling it quits over a referendum in Australia’s parliament. Sen. Lidia Thorpe quit the minor Greens party in a disagreement over a vote to be held this year. The referendum in question would create an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. Thorpe’s resignation shows a deep divide among Indigenous Australians on the vote.
- The North American Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame is announcing its class of 2023. This year’s 75 inductees are receiving the honor for their achievements and contributions in their respective sports. The hall was founded in last year by wife and husband duo Susan and Dan Ninham.
