A First Nations hockey team in Canada is shattering records and racism on the ice. APTN’s Angel Moore tells us how anti-Indigenous sentiments on the ice and in the stands helped form the team.
Jordan Harmon traveled from Oklahoma to Atlanta recently and met some folks working to stop the construction of a police training facility that some call Cop City. She ended up adding some Indigenous muscle to the effort. ICT’s Stewart Huntington introduces us to the Native lawyer.
Indigenous values are at the heart of a program started by a Comanche woman over 50 years ago. LaDonna Harris, now in her 90s, has developed Native leaders across the world. ICT’s Shirley Sneve spoke to her daughter, Laura Harris, who now leads this nonprofit organization.
The Indian Gaming Association is hosting its tradeshow and convention in San Diego, California, March 27-30. The tradeshow will host hundreds of speakers and exhibitors as well as educational workshops. ICT will be there to bring you daily coverage and insight on the gaming industry landscape.
A slice of our Indigenous world
- The Ninth Circuit Court met this week to review appeals by Apache Stronghold to save Oak Flat from development. Resolution Copper, is a foreign firm, wanting to mine the area until it collapses into a two-mile-wide crater — ultimately destroy the sacred site.
- Indigenous advocates are demanding Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham withdraw a contentious political appointment. James Mountain was chosen by Grisham to head the New Mexico’s Indian Affairs Department but his background is concerning Indigenous community members.
- Montana lawmakers have passed a bill to rename a portion of Highway 89 after an Indigenous leader. Earl Old Person represented his nation for 70 years, most of that time on the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council.
- A Canadian First Nations artist is adding Indigenous culture and heritage to designs on playing cards. Gitxsan citizen and artist Michelle Stoney loves to create art inspired by her nation. From jewelry and drums, to graphic design and murals, the artist blends her culture into many of her projects.
