This week, part of President Joe Biden’s 16-minute speech included a small bit about Spirit Mountain also known as Avi Kwa Ame. All signs indicated that Biden will soon designate sacred site as a national monument. That’s something tribal leaders have been asking for for years. Joining us from Washington to talk about this is Fort Mojave Chairman Timothy Williams.
The Hawaiian volcano Mauna Loa has started erupting for the first time in nearly 40 years. It is located on the Big Island and has the attention of many because of its spectacular views. Joining us to share the latest is Chad Blair from Honolulu Civil Beat.
Kentucky is a state that has no federally recognized tribes today. However, many Indigenous nations all once lived in that area. One Indigenous ally is making sure the history of those tribes is respected and that includes not allowing schools to use Natives as mascots. Angela Arnett Garner joins us to share more of her work.
A slice of our Indigenous world:
- Dacoda McDowell Wahpekeche has day one coverage for one of the largest gatherings for leaders of Native nations in Washington, D.C.
- The U.S. Senate passed a key piece of legislation to protect cultural items.
- In Australia, a United Nations-backed mission is recommending the Great Barrier Reef be added to the list of endangered World Heritage sites.
- The Forbes 30-under-30 award list came out with two Indigenous changemakers receiving honors.
