Senator Victoria Steele recognizes National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and recounts the work she and legislative Democrats have done to support and protect survivors of domestic violence.

“October has been recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month since 1989. This is a time to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and be a voice for its victims. I have dedicated my time in the legislature to uplifting those who have been victimized in their own homes.

Just this past session, I introduced the following bills to address the horrific aspects of domestic violence:

  • SB 1219 – aggravated assault; violation; court order
  • SB 1218 – sexual assault study committee
  • SB 1216 – orders of protection; duration
  • SB 1025 – aggravated assault; strangulation; sentencing
  • SB 1024 – appropriation; domestic violence; strangulation; examinations

It deeply angers me that the Republican majority did not work to pass these bills. However, despite their stonewalling, Senate Democratic leadership was responsible for getting $4 million allocated to Native American Domestic Violence services and $7.5 million for other domestic violence services in Arizona.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, we know three women in the United States are killed each day by a current or former intimate partner. This abuse can no longer go unaddressed. Our work to ensure the safety of every victim will continue.

If you are currently experiencing domestic violence, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 or text “START” to 88788.
