California Coalition for Rural Housing
The California Coalition for Rural Housing announced its opposition yesterday to a California ballot initiative being proposed by out of state mobile sports book companies.
“If passed, this proposition would be catastrophic for California tribes, who have faced a long history of generational poverty caused by land theft, displacement, and marginalization.
Gaming has finally enabled some tribes to achieve self-sufficiency and to address basic needs of their members, including decent homes. The out-of-state corporate interests pushing this measure are dangling a token amount of funding that may never materialize. The reality is that this proposition would greatly weaken tribal gaming, pit gaming tribes against non-gaming tribes, and homeless interests against tribal interests,” said Rob Wiener, California Coalition for Rural Housing Executive Director.
California Coalition for Rural Housing
Formed in 1976 following a farmworker housing conference, California Coalition for Rural Housing is one of the oldest state low-income housing coalitions in the country. Through advocacy, organizing, research, and technical assistance, our goal is to make the case for rural housing improvement and strengthen the capacity of the nonprofit and public sectors to provide affordable housing and related facilities. Members are primarily community-based nonprofit and public developers, including the largest self-help housing producers in the United States, as well as local government officials, and local activists concerned about rural quality of life.
