News Release
Oklahoma City Indian Clinic
Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic providing health and wellness services to American Indians in central Oklahoma, wants to promote healthy habits to improve your quality of sleep.
Sleep Awareness Week will be observed March 13 – 19, 2022. Sleep is essential for keeping us healthy and alert. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), insufficient sleep has been linked to weight gain, high blood pressure, reduced immunity, poor mood, reduced attention span and depression. Drowsy driving also increases your risk for crashes.
“Adults typically need between seven and nine hours of sleep every night,” said Janice Hixson, MD, OKCIC’s Chief Medical Officer. “Some adults may function better with six or 10 hours of sleep, but it’s best to stay close to the recommended guidelines.”
Sleep hygiene refers to the habits you form to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. Certain habits can prevent you from falling asleep, like consuming caffeine in the afternoon or evening. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends going to bed early enough to get the recommended amount of sleep and keeping a consistent schedule, even on weekends and vacations. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine by keeping your room at a cool and comfortable temperature, limiting exposure to bright lights and electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime, reducing your fluid intake and avoiding large meals before sleeping. If you’re unable to fall asleep, get up and do a calming activity for 20 minutes before trying to go back to sleep.
“Adjusting your sleep hygiene can make a big difference,” Hixson said. “Changing just one of your daily habits can help you sleep more soundly.”
If you still experience sleep problems while practicing healthy sleep habits, talk to your medical provider. You can also find help from the sleep team at an accredited American Academy of Sleep Medicine Sleep Center. Find one near you at https://sleepeducation.org/sleep-center/sleep-centers-by-state/
Many people struggle through sleepless nights, but implementing a few lifestyle changes can help you sleep soundly.
