Canadian and U.S. Tribes find name change offensive
Indigenous peoples called it “Lake Ontario” long before there was Canada and the United States. J. Conrad Seneca, president of the Seneca Nation of Indians, said the name is an Indigenous term and sacred to the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy.
Marquette University digitizes boarding school documents
Milwaukee, Wisconsin based Marquette University has digitized over 300,000 documents from the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions, allowing for anyone to access them with the click of a button. ICT caught up with archivist Emily Shelton to discuss the project and how to use it.
Another Indigenous woman might be headed to Congress
New York State Assemblymember Claire Valdez, Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, is running for the U.S. House. She hopes to win New York’s seventh congressional district that covers two of New York City’s boroughs — Brooklyn and Queens. She advanced from the Democratic primary on June 23. If elected, Valdez would become the first known Native American to represent New York in Congress. Attorney passes the bar in Montana
A citizen of the Crow Nation has achieved a rare feat in Montana. Less than a year after graduating from the University of Montana’s Alexander Blewett III School of Law, Ericka Camposan earned admission to practice in every tribal court in Montana. The state has 12 tribes and seven tribal court systems.
