Some of Indian Country’s most well-known creatives, advocates, and allies gathered for IllumiNative’s Indigenous House LA event earlier this month. ICT’s Paris Wise spoke some of these leaders on what this event means for moving forward in entertainment, fashion, art, politics, and more.
Tusweca Tiospaye created the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota Language Summit to unite all of their language groups, reservations, and communities in the United States and Canada — all in efforts to revitalize language and culture. Earlier this month, 600 people attended the conference in Rapid City, South Dakota, representing 32 tribal nations. Its executive director is Mike Carlow, Jr. ICT’s Shirley Sneve has more.
- The Department of the Interior announced it is investing $327 million to fulfill water rights settlements in the 2024 fiscal year. Indian water rights, as they are called in government capacities, are guaranteed to tribes as part of U.S treaty responsibilities.
- The Manitoba Metis Federation filed a suit against the National Research Council after a sale on an office tower fell through. In the suit, the federation alleges that the NRC did not meet its constitutional obligation to engage with Indigenous people in good faith.
- In Bolivia, an Indigenous fashion show is promoting the work of Aymara women in the Andes. ICT’s Mark Trahant has the story.
