The 1990s were good to the Winnebago and Omaha Indian tribes of Nebraska. A quirk of geography gave them small slivers of land on the Iowa side of the Missouri River, and a change in federal and state laws opened the door to Las Vegas-style gambling in 1992. Both tribes hastily opened casinos – Winna Vegas near Sloan and CasinoOmaha near Onawa. For a couple of years the tribes had dominion over the gambling market on the Interstate 29 corridor from Sioux City to Omaha.
