Top elected officials in Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston are urging defeat of a bill that would restore the U.S. government’s authority to place land into trust for Indian tribes that gained federal recognition after 1934. In a letter dated Tuesday, the officials urge Sens. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., and Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., to oppose legislation sponsored last month by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
