Indigenous peoples from around the world were celebrated as Aug. 9 is recognized as International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples by the United Nations.

The date is recognized from the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982, according to the UN website.

Indigenous people make up less than 5 percent of the world’s population, with an estimated 476 million people living in 90 countries.

Organizations from around the world took to social media to share support.

The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues celebrated Indigenous youth.

The National Indigenous Australians Agency said it is “committed to making sure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are heard, recognized and empowered.

U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, Laguna Pueblo, spoke of her experience at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

“I saw the power that Indigenous communities across the globe carry with them everywhere they go, and I’m proud of the work @Interior does to respect Indigenous knowledge in the face of the climate crisis. #WorldIndigenousPeoplesDay

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared a short video on what the day means to him.

The National Congress of American Indians “honors the ties binding global Indigenous communities.”

“By weaving our perspectives into policy and actions, we foster a brighter, more inclusive, and more resilient world for future generations,” the organization’s social media post said.

IllumiNative said the day is for honoring Indigenous cultures from around the world.

Greenpeace International highlighted the crisis the Yanomami People of Brazil are facing related to gold miners moving into their territory.
