The hoop dancing world championship is heading to the Heard Museum in Phoenix in February. The competition in its 33 year brings in dancers from all over the world. The Duncan family competes every year and has claimed the title in the past. Ken Duncan has been competing in the competition since its formation. He tells us more about hoop dancing.

By day, she can be seen co-coordinating the Indigenous First Art and Gift Shop. It’s a project of the American Indian Community Housing Organization. But after work, she’s pushing the boundaries of Indigenous filmmaking. Khayman Goodsky is a Duluth, Minnesota filmmaker who creates films exploring Ojibwe teachings side by side with punk music.

The government has hit a ceiling. Last month, the U.S. government hit the debt ceiling. Unable to continue borrowing, the Treasury Department has resorted to so-called “extraordinary measures,” which would delay a default until June. Regular contributor John Tahsuda tells us more.

  • In Nevada, a former child actor best known for his role in the film “Dances With Wolves,’’ has been arrested. Nathan Chasing Horse is being charged with sex trafficking, sexual assault of a child younger than 16 and child abuse. According to Las Vegas police records, the assaults took place over a period of two decades.
  • The Biden administration moved last week to protect Minnesota’s pristine Boundary Waters Wilderness Area. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland closed over 350 square miles of the Superior National Forest to mineral and geothermal leasing for 20 years.
  • The Cherokee Nation is seeking art for its yearly fine art exhibition and competition in Oklahoma. Artwork is now being accepted for the 52nd Annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale. Beginning in April, the month-long show is the longest-running Native art show and competition in the state.
  • Indigenous representation at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival came back strong as the event returned in-person. Eleven Native films were showcased and this year, and Illuminative opened its Indigenous House. Roselynn Yazzie has the sights and sounds.
