  • President Joe Biden delivers his third State of the Union address Thursday night. Last year, he only mentioned tribes once and didn’t speak to any tribal-specific issues. It is unclear if that will be different this year. So far, New Mexico congressional members Gabe Vasquez and Teresa Leger-Fernandez have Indigenous guests for this year’s address.
  • Five Alaska projects are set to receive $125 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to increase reliable access to energy in remote areas. The money will pay for solar and hydro-grid developments. Out of the 17 states to receive this funding, the DOE awarded more money to Alaska than any other state.
  • A health study supported by the National Institutes of Health shows some concerning news. Over 70 percent of Indigenous young adults aged 20 through 39, and 50 percent of Indigenous teens have cholesterol levels high enough to put them at risk for heart disease.
  • A new study found in the medical journal Jama Dermatology found that community areas near federally recognized tribal lands experienced higher rates of melanoma more than elsewhere in the country. ICT’s Ashley Sinclair tells us how difficulties in gathering data may be part of the issue.
  • Native leaders and Chilkat weavers in Southeast Alaska are celebrating the return of an ancient robe after donors purchased it at a Seattle auction. Through the Burke Museum in Washington state, it was gifted to the Sealaska Heritage Institute. Weavers and elders gathered, honoring the garment, which is over 150 years old, with traditional songs and dances.
  • A new community center is giving Two-Spirit relatives a safe space. A Lakota couple in Rapid City, South Dakota, created the state’s first Indigenous-led two-spirit space called Uniting Resilience. The center will provide counseling and job assistance and share resources with the South Dakota Coalition Ending Domestic Violence.
