The largest dam removal project in United States history is underway along the California-Oregon border. That comes in a move spurred and hailed by tribes eyeing the return of salmon runs. ICT’s Stewart Huntington has more on how, in some ways, removing the dams is the easy part. The project will cost $500 million, paid for by taxpayers and electric company ratepayers.

  • Former Navajo Nation president Jonathan Nez has announced his run for Congress. Nez is running as a Democrat for Arizona’s second congressional district, and is running against Republican incumbent Eli Crane, who is a member of the Freedom Caucus. District two includes the sovereign lands of fourteen Indigenous nations who account for 20 percent of the population.
  • A pilot program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture aims to bring more locally produced bison into the massive federal commodities food program. ICT’s Amelia Schafer has more.
  • A group of Indigenous women in Greenland are suing the government for forcing them to use contraception. They lived in boarding schools among thousands affected by a Danish government campaign attempting to control the growth of the Indigenous population in Greenland.
