Navajo Nation and City of Albuquerque to Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Race Relations, Treatment of Navajo Citizens

Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission

Speaker of the 24 Navajo Nation Council Seth Damon (Bááháálí, Chichiltah, Manuelito, Tsé Lichíí’, Rock Springs, Tsayatoh), Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission Chairperson Jennifer Denetdale, and Commission Executive Director Leonard Gorman will join Albuquerque, New Mexico Mayor Tim Keller to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the Navajo Nation and the City of Albuquerque on August 9, 2019.

Spurred by the 2018 death of a Navajo homeless man and an incident between a teacher and two Native American pupils at Cibola High School in the city, the Commission, the Albuquerque Human Rights Board, and the City of Albuquerque’s Office of Civil Rights have been developing the Memorandum of Understanding for the past year.

The Memorandum of Understanding will strengthen communication and the coordination of services between the Nation and the City with respect to the treatment of Navajo citizens. Additionally, it will help the Commission address racist incidents and hate crimes.
