March is Women’s History Month. To celebrate the women who have made a difference in our lives and in the lives of their native nations, here’s an encore presentation of an interview from our archives. The national magazine “Art Review” named its Top 50 Most Influential People in art. ICT’s Shirley Sneve has this conversation with Candace Hopkins.

  • A tribal nation in California, has become the first to manage tribal land with the National Park Service. In a historic memorandum of understanding, the Yurok Tribe will be returned 125 acres of its original land to serve as a new gateway to Redwood National and State Parks.
  • A federal court ruling in favor of an Arizona copper mine is not deterring a group that holds the land sacred. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled this month in favor of Resolution Copper’s plan for a mine at a location known as Oak Flat Apache Stronghold is poised to file an appeal to the supreme court on April 15.
  • Alaska’s largest tribal hospital is expanding. The Alaska Native Medical Center is undergoing a multi-year $257 million project to improve and expand emergency services. According to the president of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and Yup’ik citizen Valerie Davidson, the expansion makes up for decades of under-investment in infrastructure.
  • The Alaska Federation of Natives is searching for its next president. Former AFN president Julie Kitka is stepping down after 33-years of service to the organization. AFN is the largest statewide organization in Alaska serving 179 tribal nations and hundreds of village corporations.
  • Cheyenne-Arapaho and Mescalero Apache skier, Ross Anderson, will make history as the first ever Native American to be inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. In 2006, during a race in the French Alps, Anderson hit a staggering 154 miles per hour, a record no American skier has touched.
  • A section of Interstate 90 in Wisconsin, is getting a new name. Gov. Tony Evers signed a bill, to honor Ho-Chunk code talkers. The Ho-Chunk World War II Code Talkers Memorial Highway highlights 14 veterans, who sent messages in their native language, which could not be deciphered by the enemy.
