Heirs of Doctor Charles Eastman discovered a manuscript, which now has been published by the Minnesota Historical Society. The Santee Dakota surgeon met his wife on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where he tended to injuries following the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. The book is called “In the Beginning, The Sun.” ICT’s Shirley Sneve has this interview with cousins Gail Johnsen and Syd Beane.

The history of interactions by Native journalists with presidents and vice presidents is longer than the United States itself. ICT’s Mark Trahant has a history lesson on this topic.

  • City officials in Los Angeles, California are making staff changes that are sparking tribal leaders to speak out. City Hall announced that Cynthia Ruiz will no longer have her position as a Water and Power Commission
  • Two Native physicians are hoping to create a new school of Indigenous medicine. This project was started by Koyukon Athabascan citizen Allison Kelliher, and Oglala citizen Don Warne, at Johns Hopkins University.
  • The Gila River Indian Community came together to witness a historic moment both in its tribal history and in the greater story of Native Americans and their relationship with the federal government. ICT’s Daniel Herrera has this report about Vice President Kamala Harris’s visit to the nation.
