Proposed legislation in Congress would reverse the Interior Department’s decision to withdraw future oil and gas development around Chaco Canyon National Historical Park. The U.S. Army’s process for repatriating the human remains of ancestral relatives is changing. Mark Trahant talks to Dianna Hunt. She is a senior editor for ICT and has been directing much of the coverage.

Congress has been unable to pass appropriations into law. That means, unless there is a last minute reprieve, the federal government will go into shutdown mode starting this weekend. ICT regular contributor John Tahsuda has more. He is a principal with Navigators Global.

  • The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians has set up a voter registration agency at its hospital, the Shingle Springs Health and Wellness Center. The goal, according to Chairwoman Regina Cuellar, is to register 100 percent of its citizens.
  • National Parks are booming all over the country setting records for visitor spending. The Department of Interior announced last month that visitor spending in communities near national parks in 2022 was $50.3 billion. Nearly 312 million visitors spent $23.9 billion in communities within 60 miles of a national park last year.
  • Northwest tribal leaders recently hosted the first Tribal Opioid Summit in Tulalip, Washington. According to the summit, tribes have had more deaths related to fentanyl than from Covid-19. National Indian Health Board Chairperson and Alaska Representative Chief William Smith said that American Indians and Alaska Natives are dying from fentanyl overdoses at a rate 30 percent higher than any other group in the United States.
