The devastating Hawaiian fires of 2023 have been labeled among the deadliest wildfires in over a century, leaving over a hundred dead and many more homeless. The Lahaina wildfire, which started as a brush fire fueled by high winds, hit what was once the capital of the “Kingdom of Hawai’i.”
In Canada, unprecedented wildfires choked skies across the country and much of the eastern United States – and as far south as Texas. The fires displaced tens of thousands of indigenous peoples from their homes in 94 first nations.
Of course, Indigenous communities are often the hardest hit by climate change disruptions and at the United Nations climate conference known as COP 28 held in Dubai, advocates worked to make sure indigenous voices were heard … and heeded. We catch up with their efforts.
And in Alaska we take a look at the work of environmentalists speaking out against what’s known as the Willow Project from oil producer Conocophillips. If completed it would produce an estimated 180,000 barrels of oil per day from the state’s North Slope Borough.
