Nepinak Memorial Walk
Dozens of Indigenous peoples and supporters walked in memory of the Tanya Nepinak, Pine Creek First Nation who has been missing since 2011 and whose remains are believed to be in the Brady Landfill on the edge of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The group marched to the Odena Circle at the forks of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers where prayers and songs were offered up in her memory.
Wind River Church
Christian pastor Sarah Lucas called an Arapaho ceremony “idol worship.” Now the tribe wants her gone. Lucas, of Foundations for Nations church says she isn’t going anywhere.
Milwaukee Boarding School
Indigenous organizers and allies are planning their fourth annual walk in honor of Orange Shirt Day on Sept. 30. The walk, scheduled for Oct. 3, will honor several girls who died while attending the Good Shepherd Indian School in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Researchers met with ICT to discuss the importance of remembering boarding school survivors and victims.
Rez Cops
Looking for action when he returns to his community and finding love and laughter is the journey of the “Rez Cop,” a new series created and co-produced on First Nation by Leigh George.The story reflects George’s own journey back home to his community of Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point, where the series was filmed in south-central Canada.
Kiowa filmmaker represents in new Obama Center
Jeffrey Palmer is an award-winning filmmaker of the bio-pic “Words from a Bear” about Kiowa writer N.Scott Momaday. He shares his talents at the newly-opened Obama Presidential Center, where his former students helped tell the story.
Homelands Powwow
Citizens of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans are working to re-establish a connection with their ancestral homelands in New York and western Massachusetts. Some 200 of them are traveling from Wisconsin for a powwow in Lenox, Mass., on Oct. 3-4. “Standing on the land, you feel that you’re very welcome,” said Stochbridge citizen Shawn Stevens about being in the homelands.
