The New York Giants got caught in a flip-flop Thursday evening on Twitter regarding the name of the Washington NFL team.
Deadspin originally reported that the Giants had tweeted out their regular season schedule around 8:30 p.m. The original image included all team names except Washington.

A little under an hour later, the Giants tweeted the schedule again, this time using the R-word. As of publication neither tweet has been deleted.

“We use both names for Washington,” Senior Vice President of Communications Pat Hanlan said when approached by Deadspin.
See the conversation below between Hanlan and Deadspin reporter Patrick Redford:

Hi Pat, I’m curious, was the decision not to use “Redskins” in your tweet announcing the 2015-16 schedule while you used every other team’s nickname deliberate? Thanks.

Patrick, no. We have different formats of schedule and use “Washington” and “Redskins” interchangeably… Will send the Redskins version separately
Patrick Redford <patrick.redford@deadspin.com>9:26 PM (40 minutes ago)
to: Pat. re: Schedule
Okay, but why are there two versions? Do you have other versions of the schedule where a single different team is identified by their city instead of their nickname?
Hanlon, Pat <Pat.Hanlon@giants.nfl.net>9:47 PM (19 minutes ago)
to:me. re: Schedule
In response to your last question, no, on our graphics, no other team is referred to by both city and nickname.

to: Pat. re: Schedule
Got it. So why did the team only do one alternate one for Washington?

to: me. re: Schedule
We use both names for Washington.
As NBCSports reported, the Eagles did a similar about-face last year when their week four game was referred to only as “Eagles vs. Washington” in multiple places, including social media and the website. However, in other publications and media reports, the R-word was used.
While Deadspin is using the R-word regularly in their reports of the incident, NBCSports has refrained and referred to the team simply as “Washington.”
