The skull of Cayuga chief Wayunta, who died in 1834, acquired by Samuel Morton, measured, and then pictured in his book, Crania Americana. The indiscriminate collection of Indian remains for scientific studies led to the passage of federal laws that protect Indian gravesites from looting.
