- The U.S. Justice Department is adding 10 staffers in five regions to assist on MMIP cases. The support includes aiding investigations and promoting coordination among federal, tribal, local, and state law enforcement. The five regions include the Northwest, Southwest, Great Plains, Great Lakes, and Southeast.
- A Northern Plains tribe is demanding that the Army respect its sovereignty as it moves to return the remains of a boy who died at the Carlisle Indian Boarding School in 1879. Tamara St. John of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate in South Dakota says the Army is denying proper consultations and ceremonies during the process, as spelled out in the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. The Army claims NAGPRA does not apply to this situation.
- The city of Pine Ridge held its first ever Pine Ridge Greasy Grass Victory Day to celebrate victory 147-years ago. Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho Nations fought and defeated General Custer and the seventh cavalry at the battle of Greasy Grass, also known as the Battle of Little Bighorn.
- Cowlitz citizen, comedian, and Illustrator Joey Clift has partnered with Comedy Central on a hit animated series called “Gone Native.” The topics are straight from the pulse of Indian Country and include spirit animals, Native culture and one of Clift’s favorites, sports mascots.
